XSharp (X#) is an open source implementation of the XBase language. It was created by a group of four former developers of the Vulcan.Net development language, four people with many years of XBase experience but also ample experience in creating a development language. The X# compiler is created on top of the (open source) Roslyn source code, the source code to the Microsoft C# and VB compilers. X# comes with a compiler, its own runtime, Visual Studio integration, and some tools.
To support the different variations of the XBase language, X# added the concept of dialects. There are six dialects at this moment. The first dialect created was Core, which is like C# with an XBase syntax. This dialect does not require its own runtime. The other dialects are VO, Vulcan, Xbase++, Harbour, and last but not least FoxPro. All non-core dialects have their own runtime that adds support for XBase datatypes, such as Date and Array, familiar functions such as CtoD, DToc, Val, Str, Left, and Right, and also add support for accessing data in DBFs with the concept of workareas / cursors. Some of these dialects have small differences in the language to support the various syntactical differences of the XBase language. The Foxpro dialect is not completely ready at this moment, but we plan to finish it before Southwest Fox.
You can download X# for free from www.xsharp.eu. The project also has a support program: "Friends Of XSharp (FOX)". If you register as a supporter you get more frequent updates of the product and direct support from the X# development team members, and you help to keep the project alive.
